Thanks Val :)

That's great to hear about you and your parents. When my parents migrated in 87 it was so much harder.

Oma certainly sounds like she was one cool lady. So sorry she's gone. And it is true what you say about the internet bringing people closer. I have a better relationship with my parents now I talk to them on Skype/Messenger every week, than I ever did when were livinginthe same country.

I really will try continuing with Hitchhikers Guide, I really didn't get very far last time.

Oh there are SO many classics I haven't read yet. My 'to read' list is ridiculously long.
Tempted to get an e-book reader for my next travels so I don't 'waste' time reading books not on the list or mediocre stuff if I can't find anything better (I don't want to buy new books).

Simone, your blog post preeeeety much describes how I was feeling about 12 months ago... I wanted to serve people and be of use, but most of all do productive GOOD with my time.

Seek opportnities actively, unfortunately they dont all find you... but most importantly keep in mind who you are helping and the closer you can get to these people hopefully the more satisfaction and fulfillment you can draw from your work.

One final point, just get involved! As long as you are serving people your time is worthwhile. I just took the plunge and started volunteering doing gardening for the elderly for a NPO not really sure if it was the best use of my time or skills but I actually loved it!

Wish you luck on your journey!

Good work.

Great post Simone! How are we ever going to change anything if we don't start changing things in our own life? I am convinced that many people just need inspiration to start a domino effect, and you might set that off in others. I have noticed recently that people look surprised when I greet them even if I don't know them, but I am hoping they will then in turn do that to the next person they meet. And there you have it! Good luck on your journey. And say hello to Oma!

It's good that you feel like you have to do something, you're very emotional in that sense - which could be a very productive trigger for something big.

My issue is that I have lost all hope. Dramatic restrictions need to be put in place from government level in order to prevent global warming, we need to stop buying useless plastic shit then throwing it in a pit when we're done with it. The more shit we buy, the more factories and mines with no climate control are built in china to provide for the western world - the demand from us is why it is happening. We are the problem, but the government needs to force us to change - noone mainstream wants to follow the minority.

Also; it scares me that its cheaper, in some cases, to buy fast food than to buy the ingredients to make it yourself - for people living minimum wage on long hrs it's a little tricky to spare the time and money to cook healthy local produce meals.

although, true, vegetarian diets are pretty cheap. need that additional vitamin B and Iron though.

Dumpster diving sounds like an awesome idea. People are so wasteful :( *sigh*

but, yeah, I admire your discipline and passion to help, I should do more myself.

Simone, you're a remarkable, generous person. I love that about you!

Thanks for the food for thought. It may explain a bit of emptiness and disconnect I'm feeling now.

I think sometimes we get so carried away with the minutiae of our lives we lose the big picture. So thanks for reminding me. :)
